Weprin, Liu Rally for Cuomo Signature Of Utility Responsibility Bill

    Assemblymember Davis Weprin (D-Richmond Hill, Fresh Meadows) and State Sen. John Liu (D-Bayside, College Point, Whitestone, Fresh Meadows, Whitestone, Little Neck) today will rally for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to sign the Utility Responsibility Bill.

    The measure, S4118/A5254, requires public utility companies to repair or replace all damaged residential lateral sewer and water pipes where such damage was caused by such public utility company. It passed both the assembly and senate in the recently concluded legislative session.

    The rally is slated for 1:30 p.m., today, July 11 at the intersection of 188th Street & 81st Avenue in Jamaica.


    Addabbo Brings Civil Serice Job Info To District

    State Sen. Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Glendale, Middle Village, Maspeth and parts of South Ozone Park, Ridgewood, Woodside and The Rockaways) later this month is partnering with the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) to bring an information session to the district on how to apply for a New York City government job.

    If you are looking for a job, the city has over 80 different agencies and employs 300,000 people with opportunities for nearly every occupation. During this information session, members from DCAS will provide job seekers with everything they need to know about applying for New York City government jobs and becoming a civil servant.

    “Finding a job — especially one in city government — can be a difficult task. There are so many different agencies and exams to take that it can quickly become overwhelming for a job seeker,” Addabbo said. “That is why I teamed up with DCAS to bring this Info Session to the district. The experts from DCAS will help those in attendance navigate the complexities of finding and applying for government jobs. I hope to see plenty of people take advantage of this great opportunity.”

    The New York City Civic Service 101 Info Session is slated from 2-4, Thursday, July 25at the Woodhaven branch of the Queens Public Library, 85-41 Forest Parkway in Woodhaven. For more information about this Information Session, contact Addabbo’s office at 718-738-1111.


    Sanders Presents Local youth Scholarship Awards

    State Sen. James Sanders Jr. (D-Far Rockaway, Rochdale Village) earlier this month presented awards and scholarships to select community youth at a ceremony at his District Office in South Ozone Park.

    “You are a blessing to this community and I know you will go on to do great things,” Sanders said at the July 1 ceremony. “It is my hope that you will learn from the recognition you have received today and come back to your respective neighborhoods to inspire others after you have achieved success in your own lives.”

    Some of the recipients were high school undergraduates who received a NYS Senate Youth Leadership Award for their academic achievements and others were new high school graduates, who have been accepted into colleges and each received a scholarship check in the amount of $2,000 from the NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators.

    The Leadership Award recipients are:

    Nancy Diaz Martinez – resident of Far Rockaway – student at the Academy of Medical Technology

    Dennis A. Kwarteng – resident of Far Rockaway – student at Queens High School for Information, Research and Technology

    Mariah Omadutt – resident of Jamaica – student at Richmond Hill High School 

    Rifath Siddique – resident of Ozone Park – student at Richmond Hill High School 

    Dadrian Cole – resident of Jamaica – student at John Adams High School

    Jannatun Nessa Saima – resident of Richmond Hill – student at Richmond Hill High School 

    The scholarship winners are:

    Olga Henriquez – resident of Ozone Park – graduate of Richmond Hill High School 

    Asfiyah Shafi  – resident of Far Rockaway – graduate of Academy of Medical Technology 

    Shanic Agard – resident of South Ozone Park – graduate of Academy of Medical Technology 

    Those who could not attend the ceremony will have their awards mailed to them.
