Addabbo Holds Supply Drive For Furloughed Federal Workers

Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr.

State Sen. Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. (D-Howard Beach, Middle Village) is teaming up with some local institutions for a food and toiletry drive to help any of the 800,000 furloughed federal workers who are working without pay because of the federal government shutdown.

“It is a shame that these hardworking federal employees are caught up in this political back-and-forth,” Addabbo said. “Whether or not President Trump’s wall should be funded, these people — who have families they need to feed and bills that need to be paid — should not be held hostage.”

In order to help the furloughed workers, the drop off locations will be accepting non-perishable food items like canned goods, pastas, cereals, and others, as well as toiletries such as soaps and detergents, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and more.

Supplies can be dropped at Addabbo’s district offices, 159-53 102nd Street in Howard Beach and 66-85 73rd Place in Middle Village. Queens County Savings Bank locations at 156-02 Crossbay Boulevard and 156-32 Crossbay Boulevard (inside the Stop & Shop parking lot) will also act as drop off locations.

The supplies will be distributed out of Our Lady of Grace Church, 100-05 159th Avenue in Howard Beach and the Sacred Heart food pantry, 83-17 78th Avenue in Glendale. In order to collect needed supplies at the drop off locations, federal workers will have to display their federal ID.

City Councilman Rory Lancman.
State Sen. James Sanders Jr.

City Council Member Rory Lancman (D-Kew Gardens Hills, Pomonok, Electchester, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Jamaica Estates, Briarwood, Parkway Village, Jamaica Hills, Jamaica) candidacy for the open Queens District Attorney seat received the endorsement of State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Southeast Queens) yesterday.

“The people of Queens need a District Attorney who is ready to fight injustice and bring true reform to our criminal justice system. Councilman Rory Lancman is that person. Time and again, Councilman Lancman has shown that he’s a progressive champion for criminal justice reform who is ready to fix the inequities that have festered in our system for too long. As District Attorney, he will put the people first and I am proud to support him,” said Sanders.

“Thank you Senator Sanders for your long leadership on civil rights and criminal justice issues, and for your trust in my ability to bring real reform to the Queens District Attorney’s office. I’m going to partner with our elected officials, community leaders and the public to end the over policing and mass incarceration of communities of color, and instead focus on crimes against working people, women, immigrants, homeowners, and tenants. I’m grateful for Senator Sanders’ support and partnership,” said Lancman.
