Queens Hospital, 82-68 164th Street in Jamaica, announced yesterday its receipt of an award from the Northeast Business Group on Health recognizing the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality, safe care for patients.

The award was presented at the Fourth Annual Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Breakfast last week at the Union League Club in Manhattan.

“This award demonstrates our staff’s commitment to patient care, which is the hallmark of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens,” said Christopher Roker, chief executive officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. “Congratulations to the staff for their continued efforts.”

“This award reflects the strong commitment of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens’ entire staff to advancing the quality and safety of the care we provide, not only in our individual units or areas, but throughout our clinical services,” said Jean Fleischman, MD, deputy medical director for Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement Queens Hospital. “Our patients depend on the hospital to provide the latest medical advances in a high-quality manner focused on safety.”

The Northeast Business Group on Health is an employer-led coalition of health care leaders and other stakeholders that empowers its members to strive for excellence in health care and achieve the highest value in health care delivery, thereby improving the customer’s experience. It co-hosted the recent Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Breakfast with the Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog organization focusing on safety, quality, and affordability in health care.

For the past several years in the Leapfrog Group’s semi-annual hospital surveys, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens has garnered impressive scores, including its most recent B, the highest grade of any hospital in New York City.

The Leapfrog Group letter grade is intended to empower people to find a safer hospital in their community by using an easy-to-understand A, B, C, D, and F grading system. It was also behind the selection of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens’ receipt of the “Most Improved Performance Award.”

In November 2013, the Northeast Business Group on Health also honored NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens with a Leapfrog Award for its commitment to improving patient safety and for embracing transparency and accountability in its patient safety program.

That award—for “Greatest Leaps in Patient Safety and Quality”—recognized success in meeting many of the requirements on the Leapfrog measures, as well as significantly improving in seven measures and making patient safety and transparency a priority.

As a public medical facility, 2015 marked the 80th anniversary of Queens Hospital serving the communities of central and southeastern Queens, having first opened its doors as Queens General Hospital in 1935.

Encompassing 360,000 square feet, it comprises 253 licensed beds, spacious ambulatory care suites featuring both primary and specialty services, and cutting-edge equipment. It also houses four Centers of Excellence: Cancer Care, Diabetes Management, Women’s Health, and Behavioral Health.
