Earlier today, U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-Queens, Brooklyn), scolded House Republicans during his “no” vote on their budget proposal.
According to Jeffries, the Republican budget gives billions in tax breaks to the top one percent while paying for the cuts with the money of working-class Americans. The social safety net that saves millions from suffering from poverty would be eradicated and 23 million Americans would lose healthcare as a result of the budget, Jeffries said.
“House Republicans are determined to visit cruel and unusual punishment on the American people by presenting a budget that is reckless, regressive and reprehensible,” surmised Jeffries. “It’s a budget that will hurt working families,middle-classs folks, senior citizens, the poor, the sick, the afflicted, veterans and rural America.”
The budget is a large step towards overhauling the nation’s tax code. A key detail in the budget is the cuts to entitlement programs like food stamps, housing assistance, and agricultural subsidies. The GOP budget, which passed today, requires that the GOP save $203 billion over ten years through cuts to these programs and others like them.
However, the GOP budget ups the ante when it comes to the Pentagon, which will receive a budget of $620 billion.
