Assemblymember Aravella Simotas/Facebook

State Assemblymember Aravella Simotas (D-Astoria) shared her experience as a Greek immigrant and discussed Greek American life in Astoria for the Queens Historical Society’s “Immigrant Voices.”

Simotas came to Astoria from Greece with her parents when she was a baby and became the first woman to represent her district on the assembly floor in 2010.

The talk took place on October 17 at the Historical Society’s Kingsland Homestead in Flushing. She spoke about the history of Greek migration to the US and what life was like for them at first.

“It is now very difficult to immigrate and very, very difficult to get a green card, plus it’s now cost prohibitive for immigrants to think about purchasing a house in Astoria,” Simotas said.
